Can I set a maximum leverage?

Quick answer

Yes. Every account has a margin leverage that decides required margin, and two rules add caps: maximum effective leverage (core), which limits total open notional to a multiple of equity, and leverage by asset class (advanced), which sets separate caps for forex, metals, indices, energy and crypto.

Detailed answer

The two rules work alongside account leverage.

Account leverage

Determines margin: at 1:30, a $100,000 position needs about $3,333 of margin. Orders that do not fit free margin are refused.

Maximum effective leverage (core)

  • Effective leverage = total open notional ÷ equity.
  • An order that would exceed the cap is refused or flagged.

Leverage by asset class (advanced)

Separate caps per class, with defaults:

  • Forex: 1:30.
  • Metals: 1:20.
  • Indices: 1:20.
  • Energy: 1:10.
  • Crypto: 1:2.

Each cap is optional and adjustable.

Why both exist

Account leverage controls margin; the rules control exposure. A firm can give generous margin leverage while still capping how much exposure a trader takes in volatile classes.

Choosing values

The defaults follow common retail caps. Adjust them to your audience and loss limits; with tight daily limits, very high leverage mostly enables faster breaches. Publish the leverage per asset class on your rules page.
