Can I limit the number of open positions?
Quick answer
Yes, on Basic and Growth. The maximum open positions rule refuses an order that would open more positions at once than the limit, or flags it if you prefer. It is checked inside the transaction that writes the order, so simultaneous orders cannot exceed it.
Detailed answer
Position limits curb grid strategies and spreading risk across many simultaneous trades.
How it works
- Counts open positions on the account.
- Refuses a new position that would exceed the limit, for example 5.
- Action: reject order (default) or flag.
Concurrency
The check runs after taking a per-account lock inside the transaction that writes the order, counting positions from the database in that same transaction. Two orders placed in the same instant are handled one after the other, so the second sees the first. This holds across server instances.
Related rules
- Maximum total open lots: limits combined size.
- No hedging: stops opposite positions on one instrument.
- Custom rule on open positions: for example, flag at 4 and reject at 6.
Choosing a limit
Consider your traders' styles. Intraday traders rarely need many positions; basket or multi-pair strategies may need more. Too low a limit frustrates legitimate strategies.
