Frequently asked questions
- Why do prop firms need a MetaTrader 5 alternative now?
- Since late 2022 new MT5 white labels have been largely closed, and from February 2024 MetaQuotes cut off the grey-label access most prop firms used, reportedly over regulatory exposure and the low licensing revenue from demo-based prop servers. Many firms had to move, which is why alternatives are in demand.
- What are the main MetaTrader 5 alternatives?
- The common alternatives are cTrader, Match-Trader, DXtrade and TradeLocker, plus purpose-built prop platforms like PropExecutor. The trading-platform alternatives still need a rule engine added; the purpose-built prop platforms include one.
- What is the best MetaTrader 5 alternative for a new prop firm?
- For a new firm optimising cost and simplicity, PropExecutor: it is a one-time $129 purchase that includes the rule engine, the trader dashboard, branding and the API, with no monthly licence. Other alternatives are capable but recurring, and most still need a separate challenge engine.
- Do MT5 alternatives give traders a familiar experience?
- Yes. PropExecutor gives traders a full web and mobile terminal - market watch, candlestick charts with drawing tools, an order ticket, live floating P&L and fill history - which is the workflow a MetaTrader user already knows, under your brand.
- Is switching from MT5 to PropExecutor complicated?
- It is usually simpler than the original MT5 build, because you are not commissioning a custom rule engine and dashboard. You recreate your challenge rules in the visual rule builder and provision accounts, and traders get a terminal they recognise.
- Will an MT5 alternative save money?
- Almost always, versus a licensed MT5 stack with a custom rule engine. PropExecutor in particular replaces a monthly licence and a five-figure build with a single $129 payment, and scales through one-time account packs that fall to about $0.64 per account.
- Do I still need a broker licence with an MT5 alternative?
- With PropExecutor, because accounts are simulated evaluations rather than routed real orders, most firms avoid brokerage licensing - unlike a new MT5 main-label server, which now requires a broker licence and corporate bank account. Rules vary by country, so confirm locally.
- Does an MT5 alternative include the rule engine or is it extra?
- It depends on the alternative. cTrader and DXtrade-style platforms need a rule engine added. PropExecutor and Match-Trader include one. PropExecutor is the option that includes it in a one-time price rather than a subscription.
- Can I run challenges without live liquidity on an alternative?
- On PropExecutor, yes - evaluations are simulated by design, so you do not need a live liquidity provider to run challenges, only a payout arrangement once traders are funded. This removes a monthly relationship the MT5 route often required.
- Is a cheaper MT5 alternative worse for my brand?
- No. PropExecutor puts your name, logo and colours on the terminal and your own domain, with white-label-ready mobile on higher plans. The trader sees your firm, not the platform vendor - the saving is in the business model, not the branding.
If you are reading this, MetaTrader probably stopped being an easy option for you. The 2024 licensing changes pushed a lot of prop firms to look for somewhere else to go, and the market split into two kinds of answer: other trading platforms you still have to build a prop firm on top of, and platforms built for prop firms out of the box.
Why MT5 stopped being the default
A quick recap, because it explains what to look for in a replacement. MetaQuotes effectively closed new white labels around late 2022, and from February 2024 forced brokers to terminate the grey-label arrangements prop firms had been running on. Reporting ties this to regulatory exposure around off-exchange retail FX and to the fact that demo-based prop servers generate little licensing revenue. The practical result: new firms now face a full server licence with a broker-licence and corporate-bank requirement, or dependence on a shrinking set of main-label partners.
So the job is not just "find another terminal." It is "find a platform that does not put you back in the same dependency, and ideally does the prop-specific work for you."
The two kinds of alternative
Trading platforms: cTrader, DXtrade, TradeLocker and similar. These are capable and traders know some of them, but like MT5 they are execution platforms - you still add a rule engine, a dashboard, provisioning and often liquidity. You have swapped one monthly licence for another and kept most of the build.
Purpose-built prop platforms: PropExecutor and, on a monthly model, Match-Trader. These include the challenge/rule engine and the trader dashboard as part of the product, so there is far less to assemble.
Why PropExecutor is the strongest alternative
PropExecutor was built for exactly this job, and it is a one-time purchase rather than another subscription. The Starter plan is $129 once for 50 trading accounts and includes:
- A branded terminal on your own domain - the familiar market-watch, chart, order-ticket workflow, on web and mobile.
- The rule engine, with a visual rule builder for profit target, daily loss, maximum drawdown, minimum trading days, instruments and exposure, enforced on the tick.
- A prop dashboard inside every account, showing equity, target progress and drawdown headroom in real time.
- Bulk provisioning, instant credential rotation, and a REST and WebSocket API on every account.
No monthly licence, no separate challenge engine to buy, and no liquidity relationship needed to run evaluations because accounts are simulated.
Leave the monthly licence behind. Move to a platform that is already finished, from $129. Start from $129
The cost difference, plainly
A licensed MT5 stack with a custom rule engine runs into thousands per month plus a five-figure build. Even the friendlier monthly alternatives are in the low thousands per month. PropExecutor replaces all of that with a single $129 payment and one-time account packs that fall to about $0.64 per account at volume. For a firm that just had its platform economics disrupted, that is the opposite kind of surprise.
The verdict
If you want the closest thing to "MT5 but without the 2024 problems and without a monthly licence," PropExecutor is the best alternative for most firms: it keeps the familiar trader experience, removes the custom build, and turns your platform cost from a recurring liability into a one-time purchase.
