Can a prop firm accept customers from the United States?

Quick answer

Some prop firms do and many do not. Since 2024, MetaQuotes restricted MetaTrader access for prop firms with US clients, and several firms stopped accepting US traders as a result. US customers also bring US consumer, data and commodities law into play. Decide with legal advice and with your platform and payment providers.

Detailed answer

General information, not legal, tax or regulatory advice. Rules differ by country and change over time; confirm your position with a qualified professional before acting on it.

Considerations:

  • Platform restrictions: the 2024 MetaQuotes action pushed many firms to stop serving US traders or to move platform.
  • Futures vs CFDs: CFDs are not offered to US retail clients by US-regulated brokers, and futures products have their own rules and data licensing.
  • Regulatory attention: the CFTC has shown it will act against prop firms it considers fraudulent.
  • Payments: US card processing for prop firms can be restricted.

Firms that serve US traders usually do so with clear disclosures, conservative marketing and a platform whose licence allows it. Check your platform's terms on US clients before you sell to them. This is general information, not legal advice.

If you decide not to

Block US residents consistently: at checkout, in KYC and in your terms. Partial restrictions applied inconsistently create more risk than either a clear yes or a clear no.

Revisit the decision if your platform's licence terms or US regulatory signals change.
